Over the course of their lifetime, all profiled roofs will become afflicted with cut edge corrosion, although the manifestation of the corrosion will vary. This is due to the fact that the corrosion typically begins at one of three places. These include places where the sheets overlap one another, the eaves and the edges of the profile sheets.
Typically, cut edge corrosion occurs when the sheeting panel’s protective coating begins to peel away, this often occurs naturally as part of the panels aging process. Once the protective coating is removed, water begins to permeate the metal panel. Over time rust begins to develop and in worse case scenarios which are left untreated for prolonged periods of time, the metal sheeting becomes perforated. When this occurs expensive repairs are required.
Cut Edge Corrosion nearly always features on the dilapidation surveys which landlords perform on a premises. This is often because surveyors know that in many cases cut edge corrosion is not treated by the overwhelming majority of commercial tenants.
Historically, providing treatment for cut edge corrosion could be a lengthy and expensive process. However this is no longer the case! We utilise a one part system which is applied directly to the rusty surface. Prior to this the surface should, however, be prepped ensuring that loose rust and paint has been brushed off. Once applied a durable and long lasting coating is formed which protects the underlying panel from further cut edge corrosion.
At Buckingham Industrial Coatings, our team utilise the Delcote ® product, a silicone coating which is perfectly suited to reinstating a protective coating to profiled metal cladding. Its standard 200 micron coating will provide a level of protection which is equal or greater than the panel’s original coating.
